Bertus "Bert" A. Weaver
October 30, 1923 - February 27, 2022
WEAVER, Bertus “Bert” A., age 98 of Waynesville, passed away Sunday, February 27, 2022, at Ohio Living Quaker Heights in Waynesville. Bert honorably served in the United States Marines during WWII as an amphibian tractor mechanic. He participated in action against the enemy at Kwajalein and Marshall Islands in February of 1944; Saipan, Titian, and the Marianas Islands in June of 1944; and Iwo Jima and the Volcano Islands in February and March of 1945. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal in October of 1945. During his earlier years, he worked at NCR but transitioned to Starco Inc. in Dayton. He retired as a plumbing foreman in 1986 after working nearly 30 years for Starco. Extremely spiritual and faithful to God, he was a devoted member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Bellbrook. Active and hardworking, Bert’s faith in God inspired him to read the Bible every night. He enjoyed fishing, model trains, and raising ornamental pheasants and pigeons. He was inspired by the beauty of the birds and raised them for release to nature. Along with his wife, he was known for his abundant apple orchards and bountiful gardens, which won community awards on more than one occasion. He also enjoyed beekeeping for their contribution to our agricultural benefit. Always busy, he built three A-frame homes over the years to live in. Among many things, he will be remembered for his love of family, specifically the way in which he helped organize family reunions with his family and his wife’s family on a regular basis while his kids were growing up. The reunions were often held on the shady side of the river that flowed through their property. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, in 2016; an infant son, Michael; his parents, Bert and Elva Irene Weaver; three brothers, Harrison, Paul, and Kenny Weaver; and four sisters, Bernice Newman, Betty Zechar, Esther Rose, and Goldie Hollis. He is survived by three daughters, Rebecca (David) Pyles, Susan Carroll, and Anna Newcomer; five grandchildren, Mark (Judy) Pyles, Michael Harmon, Michelle (Gerry) Mercer, Denise (Glen) Slack, and Kenneth Carroll; 10 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Ralph (Hannah) Weaver; and one sister, Florence Lowery. A graveside service will be held at 1 PM Friday, March 4, at Sugar Grove Cemetery in West Alexandria. Pastor Darrel Mercer will be officiating the services. Stubbs-Conner Funeral Home in Waynesville is serving the family. In support of the crisis in Ukraine and in Bert’s memory, contributions may be made to the International Committee of the Red Cross, via www.ICRC.org. Condolences at www.stubbsconner.com.
