YOUNG, Louraine, age 73, of Waynesville, passed away Friday, October 22, 2021, at her residence. Louraine graduated from Kings High School. She retired from GM in 1998 after 30 years of service to the company. For several years while working at GM, she was the editor of the Plant 14 newsletter. Following her official retirement, she went back to work by owning and operating a dog-grooming business, Sugar & Spike Grooming, which she greatly enjoyed. Outgoing, sweet, loyal, giving, and kind, Louraine was also known to be compassionate, thoughtful, and welcoming. She was a natural storyteller and had an unconditional love for her family. She grew up on a dairy farm, where her primary responsibility was bottle-feeding the calves, which ultimately led to a love for animals. Throughout her life, she raised dogs, cats, rabbits, chinchillas, and horses. In addition, she always fed and cared for the backyard birds, squirrels, and other wild animals. During her younger days, she enjoyed singing in a country & western band and being involved in her kids’ activities, serving as Den Mother for the Cub Scouts, Girl Scout leader, cheerleading coach, and dance mom. During her later years, she enjoyed gardening in her flower beds and getting together with her friends at Der Dutchman Restaurant, aptly called the Breakfast Club by friends and family. Among many things, she will be remembered for how much she enjoyed the Christmas holiday. From decorations to food preparation to family Christmas parties with presents for everyone, she always went all out for her family. Over the years, she hosted family Christmas parties at various venues, including the Harveysburg gymnasium and the Hopewell Day Lodge near Caesar Creek Lake, to make them special. It also became tradition over the years for her and the family to travel to Carolina Beach, North Carolina, and Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee; Hernando Beach, Florida, to visit her mother- and father-in-law; and Charleston, South Carolina, to visit her granddaughter. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Glenn; son Bryan (Lynn) Young, daughter Debra (Doug) Woodard, and assumed daughter, Dr. Alisha (Maynard) Anderson (granddaughter, raised from infancy by Louraine and Glenn); grandchildren Liam (Mattie) Young, Gehrig Lambert, Anthony (Mallorie) Woodard, and Joshua Woodard; great-grandchildren Aria and Colson; and brother Shelby (Jackie) Johnson. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Collins; her parents, Amos and Mattie Johnson; two brothers, Stanley and Johnny Johnson; and her sister, Margaret “Mickey” Rice. A celebration of life service will be held at 1 PM Tuesday, October 26, at Stubbs-Conner Funeral Home in Waynesville. Burial will be in Miami Cemetery, Corwin. Celebrant Katie Mackoway will be leading the services. The family will receive friends 11 AM - 1 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. If desired and in memory of Louraine, contributions may be made to Breast Cancer Research Foundation, 28 West 44th Street, Suite 609, New York, NY 10036. Condolences at www.stubbsconner.com.
