Beverly Jean Hatfield's Obituary
HATFIELD, Beverly Jean, age 73, of Waynesville, passed away Thursday, September 4, 2025, at her home surrounded by her loved ones.
Beverly graduated from Lebanon High School, class of ’70. She worked as a Highway Patrol Dispatcher for 10 years and was also a homemaker, raising her three daughters. In addition, she earned her associate’s degree in nursing from Miami University. She was an RN at Middletown Hospital and then Sycamore Hospital for 35 years, officially retiring in 2017. She was an ICU nurse and a PICC nurse. She was a pioneer and leader for the PICC team at Kettering Health Network and was a committed member of INS (Infusion Nurse Society), a job she took very seriously. She earned an associate's degree in American Sign Language. She loved to sign and was able to use her skills to communicate with her completely deaf brothers, Eddie and Andy, and her hard-of-hearing sister, Sylvia. She also utilized her signing skills to assist with church events and other community outreach initiatives. She was a member of the Waynesville Community Church for many years and served in many capacities over the years. She ensured that all the candy dishes were always filled, assisted in the nursery, and was part of the Administration Team and Personnel Committee. She cherished her Sunday School group and Wednesday Night Prayer group.
Caring, loving, and genuine, she was perfect. She was strong and would stand her ground when she needed to. She was always taking care of others, and this started at an early age when she was the caretaker for her two brothers, who were handicapped, often being a handful to look after. The caretaking role was her whole life. Even when she was sick for the last several months, Beverly still tried to take care of her mother. She loved spending time with her family and especially her grandkids. Beverly started the tradition of “The Hatfield Christmas Party” in the 1980’s, a tradition that still continues to this day. In addition, in 1970, she started the tradition of having family vacations to Dale Hollow Lake yearly with the Hatfields and friends; the family continues this yearly tradition. She enjoyed hiking, water skiing, and boating with her family. Her daughters will never forget how she cleaned the house while singing into a black clay vase, as if she were singing into a microphone. She cherished the quality time that she got to spend with them. She would watch the grandkids before school, have them come to her house during snow days so the kids could sled ride down the big hill in the backyard, and every week she would take the Sunday School lesson and review it with the grandkids, and pray over them and ensure they “put on their full armor of God.”
She was a very talented seamstress, known for her patchwork and repair work, as well as for making bears and creating clothes for her children and grandchildren. She bought her grandchildren sewing machines and taught them to sew, and they are now exceptionally talented themselves. Cross-stitching was also one of her favorite pastimes. She had a big sweet tooth and loved tea, especially sun tea. She had a love of cycling. Throughout her adult life, she owned multiple bicycles, a unicycle, a tandem bike, and an adult tricycle. Beverly also had a love and determination to master paddleboarding, and the ER visits that always followed. When she was young, her favorite snacks gained her the nickname, “Tators and Tea.” She loved to can and bake; her sugar cookies and chocolate chip cookies were her favorites. She also passed down her baking talents to her kids and grandchildren. Among many things, she will be remembered for the love and pride she had for her daughters, grandchildren, and extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her father, Elwood Rainey; her stepfather, Robert “Bob” Rainey; her two brothers, Edward “Eddie” Rainey and Andy Rainey; and her sister, Sylvia Britton. She is survived by her three daughters, Deanna (Bobby) Russell, Kristen (Andy) Malcolm, and Tralina (Nathan) McElwee; seven grandchildren, Owen, Caleb, Evelyn, Abigail, Madalyn, Olivia, and Valentine; her mother, Georgia Rainey; her rays of sunshine and special cousin and sister-in-law, Nickie Lynn Rainey and Faye Thiel; numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law that loved her; and her extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 PM on Friday, September 12, at Waynesville Community Church. Pastor Todd Cyphers will be officiating the service. Burial will be in Miami Cemetery, Corwin. The family will receive friends from 11 AM to 1 PM on Friday at the church. If desired, contributions may be made to the Waynesville Community Church. Condolences at www.stubbsconner.com.
