Carl Edward Sewell's Obituary
SEWELL, Carl Edward, age 88, of Waynesville, passed away on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at Miami Valley Hospital - South.
Carl grew up just south of Jackson in Breathitt County, in a town called Quicksand, Kentucky where his summers were mostly spent swimming in the river near his house. After graduating from high school, Carl proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Cold War. Upon returning home, he met and married the love of His life Darlene, who stayed by his side for 59 years. Through His career, Carl worked 7 years at NCR, and later at General Motors in Moraine where he retired as an internal quality auditor after 27 years of service. Carl & Darlene spent years serving at Ridgeville Community Church, and later attended Fairhaven Church in Centerville, OH.
The focus of Carl’s life was His LORD and Savior, Jesus Christ. A man of faith and prayer, he spent countless hours interceding for his wife, children, and grandchildren, those in need, his nation, and the advance of God’s Kingdom.
The delight of his life was his wife, Darlene, along with his daughter, April, his son, David, and later his six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He enjoyed golf for the weather and friendships, especially his hole-in-one on the Majestic Springs Golf Course in Wilmington. An avid sports fan, he always cheered on the Kentucky Wildcats, The Ohio State Buckeyes, the Cincinnati Reds, and the Cincinnati Bengals. Mostly, He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who loved him dearly. He and Darlene would take all six of his grandchildren on road trips in the RV, visiting almost every state in the Union, even taking all six to California for a month! When not working, he loved woodworking and refinishing furniture, while his great-grandchildren loved swimming in the hot tub, or riding on the lawnmower with “Pa.”
Carl’s life was marked by Godliness, humility, hard work, and generosity. He was a great listener, but also a one-of-a-kind personality. He had a great sense of humor, and he never met a stranger, whether a waitress in the restaurant or someone in the grocery store. And if it was a Veteran, it would automatically be a fifteen-minute conversation. He was so proud and grateful that all his family loved his Lord and Savior. His grandson, K.C., and his granddaughter’s husband, Evan, both became pastors, which is something Carl had always wanted to become himself. He believed that it doesn’t matter what you have; it’s what you do for the Lord that matters.
Carl was preceded in death by his son, David Arthur Sewell; his parents, Charles “Arthur” and Jewell Sewell; and his three brothers, Fitch, Charles, and Gene Sewell. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Cheryl “Darlene”; one daughter, April (Kelly) Kamentz; six grandchildren, Kelsey Kamentz, Adair (Evan) Stone, Klarysa Kamentz, K.C. (Haleigh) Kamentz, Arden Kamentz, Allegra “Reece” Kamentz; eight great-grandchildren: Ariella, Uriah Christopher Edward, and Eden Stone, Praise, Peace, Promise, Prayer David, and Prosper Kamentz, one sister, Geri “Poochie” (Jim) Beckett; and numerous nieces, nephews, family members, and friends that were loved very much.
Funeral services will be held at 6 PM on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at Stubbs-Conner Funeral Home in Waynesville. Kelly Kamentz will be officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 PM to 6 PM on Tuesday at the funeral home. If desired, contributions may be made to the Veterans Social Command (5346 Hamilton Trenton Road, Trenton, Ohio 45067) and Fairhaven Church (637 E. Whipp Rd., Centerville, Ohio 45459).
