Carlotta B. Simpson's Obituary
SIMPSON, Carlotta B., age 89, of Dayton, passed away Monday, August 25, 2025, at Wood Glen Alzheimer’s Community in Dayton.
Carlotta grew up as an only child but was very close to her cousins. She adored her aunts and uncles, who helped raise her. This close-knit family became very important to her while growing up. She graduated from Waynesville High School, class of ’53. She was an active member of the Mother’s Club, a Cub Scout Leader, and a Den Mother. When she was younger, she was a member of the Miami Chapter #107 Order of the Eastern Stars in Waynesville.
She was an incredible homemaker who skillfully utilized her sewing and cooking talents for the benefit of her family. She could sew anything that was needed. She created her daughters’ prom dresses and Halloween costumes for her children. Every year, she had a huge garden filled with tomatoes and green beans. With tomatoes ripening on the vine, you knew she would always have her famous homemade salsa ready to be sampled. During harvest season, Carlotta was always busy in the kitchen, canning away for the winter months. Everything was made from scratch and traditional home-style cooking. She was a skilled baker, known for creating the best German chocolate cake and coffee cake. All the holidays were important in their household because it meant that everyone could be together. Thanksgiving with the Workman side of the family was probably her favorite. All of the aunts, uncles, and cousins came together with around 60 people; it was always a huge family event. During the holidays, you could always count on Carlotta’s green bean casserole and sweet potatoes.
Creating beautiful pieces of art started as a hobby, but became something in which she was very talented. She was a master with oil painting, especially when painting landscapes and objects. Carlotta learned to do ceramics in Caroline Purkey’s ceramics classes. She always cherished antique dishes that were passed down through her family. She enjoyed playing euchre with her family, going to Las Vegas, and playing video poker with her husband, Dan. Being spunky and a little ornery, she was strong-minded. One thing was for sure: her family always came first. She loved them more than anything. She would travel to all the sporting events for her children and grandchildren. Among many things, she will be remembered for the love and pride she had for her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan, in 2021, and her parents, Howard and Helen (née Workman) Brown. She is survived by three sons, Chris Simpson, Mike (Francine) Simpson, and Dean Simpson; and two daughters, Jackie Hough-Measel and Amy (Brian) Powell; six grandchildren, Nikki (Cody) Hammock, Blake Simpson, Cory (Trish) Hough, Erica Osborne, Travis (Katherine) Osborne, and Garett Powell (fiancé Maddy Bakosh); and six great-grandchildren, Byrdie, Drake, Jaxton, Layken, Theodore, and Bennett.
The family will receive friends from 11 AM - 1 PM on Thursday, September 4, at Stubbs-Conner Funeral Home in Waynesville. A celebration of life service will be held immediately following the visitation at 1 PM on Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Miami Cemetery in Corwin. If desired, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Condolences at www.stubbsconner.com.
