So many wonderful things were spoken about Dan on Thursday at his funeral but there was so much that wasn't mentioned. I want to share some of those memories with you on behalf of Dan's extended family.
I have a twin brother, Eric...we are both now 40. Dan came into our lives when we were about 5yrs old. Dan fell in love and married our mom Lola and truly took on a big responsibility! One child is plenty, two at the same age might be crazy! But he did it anyway.
Dan was an amazing stepfather, he really did treat us so good.He never tried to replace our Dad but he was a great 2nd dad.
Dan was not afraid of work, he built the house on Pekin Rd that we lived in. I remember so many cold nights waiting on him to finish, big bright lights and torpedo heaters running. To this day, the smell of sawdust reminds me of the house on Pekin Rd.
He kept the yard in immaculate condition. But he enlisted all of us to help too. Cleaning out rocks in the ditches, trimming the yard with the pushmower. I tried my hand at the BIG mower but almost ran Mom over. Funny thing, Dan never ask me run the BIG mower again!
We had everything we ever needed, swimming pool out back, basketball court, pooltable, pingpong, jutebox...you name it!
So many get togethers out at Pekin Rd, Dan loved having the family around. Volleyball with the Coffman's, card games with the Alexander's (my mom's family)Fondues, grillouts and lets don't forget the hot tub! There are lots of great memories on Pekin Rd.
About 5 yrs after Dan married mom, a beautiful new addition came into our lives...Tiffany Anne...she was such a precious little thing. I considered her like my own child, I DID have 9 1/2 years on her you know! Dan just doted on her, he loved her so much. He loved us all and never let Eric and I feel that we weren't his own.
Eric went on to get married to his high school sweetheart Charlene & he has 2 beautiful children, Malea and Emma. I married in 1997 and had beautiful child whose name is Abigail.
It turns out that Emma, Abigail & Madison (Tiff's daughter) were all born within a year's time. They are big buddies now, its so wonderful!
Dan and Mom were married for approximately 28 years. 28 years of hard work on Pekin Rd, lots of vacations together, swimming parties with friends, dancing in the basement til we were worn out.
Mom was the glue that kept us together. It seems that when Mom and Dan divorced... Eric, Charlene, the kids and I saw Dan a little bit less than we were used to.
We certainly didn't love him any less but the visits weren't as frequent. Life does get so busy sometimes. Days turn into months and so on.
Then it happens, Dan starts getting sick and you realize, sadly, how much you have missed being with him. Visits then become more frequent and calls come more often.
Its like a best friend that you don't see very often, you dont love them any less, you just dont see them as often as you'd like to.
None the less, Dan was important to us too...he was our Husband, Stepdad, Father in law and Papaw Dan...He was all of those things to us.
We love him and miss him very much.##imported-begin##Emily##imported-end##
