David L. Purkey's Obituary
PURKEY, David L., age 46, of Waynesville, passed away Monday, August 14, 2023, at Kettering Medical Center.
David graduated from Waynesville High School, class of ’95. While in high school, he played on the golf team for several years. He was a member of the Waynesville Masonic Lodge #163. For over 20 years, he worked in HVAC for Warren County. In addition, he also worked for Buckminn’s D&D Harley Davidson store in Xenia, the Commissary at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Elite Construction Solutions, and Miami Cemetery in Corwin. He enjoyed working with his hands and was a jack of all trades. He was very knowledgeable about various topics, but liked to keep his skills a secret.
Growing up, he traveled with his parents to Colorado in their RV. He liked listening to a variety of music and attended festivals with his wife. The Renaissance Festival and Celtic Festival were among his favorites. He loved his cats and could make outdoor cats feel right at home inside. With a very caring and happy-go-lucky personality, he was always respectful and concerned about those he cared about. He was very particular about his appearance and took a lot of pride in being well-dressed and put together. It was a tradition for his family to gather for dinners, birthdays, and holidays. He loved spending time with everyone. During Halloween, he would work at different haunted houses and attractions when he was younger. He always looked forward to the Christmas season. He would decorate the house and watch Christmas Vacation. He was a car and motorsports enthusiast. He enjoyed a good drag race, riding his 4-wheeler and cruising on his motorcycle. He had a ’64 Nova he wanted to restore. He often worked in the garage with his dad, Benny, rebuilding and fixing different cars and motorcycles. Among many things, he will be remembered for the many burnouts that he left on his dad’s new garage floor and around town.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents and his nephew, Andrew Mescher. He is survived by his loving wife of 13 years, Amy; his parents, Benny and Karen Purkey; one brother, Eric (Charlene) Purkey; three sisters, Emily (Merle) Abrams, Julie Peters, Melanie (Craig) Swarts; and numerous nieces and nephews that he was very close to.
Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Friday, August 18, at Stubbs-Conner Funeral Home in Waynesville. Don Ingram will be officiating. Burial will be at Miami Cemetery in Corwin. The family will receive friends 11 AM -2 PM Friday at the funeral home. If desired, contributions may be made to Miami Cemetery Association. Condolences at www.stubbsconner.com.
