Donald W. Peterson Jr.'s Obituary
PETERSON, Donald W. Jr., age 80, of Waynesville, formerly of St. Charles, Illinois, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2024, at Ohio Living Quaker Heights in Waynesville.
Donald earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Photography and Literature from Columbia University in Chicago. He honorably served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam Era. He retired in 2001 from General Mills in St. Charles, Illinois, after 25 years of service.
Outgoing and often ornery in a fun way, Donald loved life and lived to its fullest. He appreciated nature, especially hiking in California and biking and hiking the mountains of Colorado. During his younger days, Donald enjoyed motorcycles, which was a hobby he impressed upon his son. He also passed on his love of music to his son, specifically his love of playing the guitar. From his days at Columbia, he acquired an artistic side and practiced patience and skill through photography. He even had a couple of his photography projects published. In addition, he enjoyed writing and often continued sharing his thoughts and ideas through blogs and other media outlets.
While his kids were growing up, Donald enjoyed the tradition of taking the boys camping and fishing at the Newark Sportsman Club in Illinois. He also enjoyed family reunions at his aunt Jan’s cabin in Michigan, especially during the 4th of July holiday. Among many things, Donald will be remembered for his love of good food. He made homemade chili, and his family will never forget how good his version was. In addition, he will also be remembered for how much he loved his faithful dog, Duffy. The care and pride he had for his sons, however, will be what Donald will always be remembered most for.
Donald was preceded in death by one son, Samuel Peterson; his parents, Donald and Joan Peterson; three brothers, Joe Peterson, Chris Peterson, and Mike Lewis; and one sister, Jan Waddell. He is survived by one son, Benjamin Donald (Teresa) Peterson; five grandchildren, Kian Peterson, Kayla Peterson, Noah Dixie, Hannah Dixie, and Logan Livers; two great-grandsons, Augustus and Kaden; one brother, Chuck Peterson; and six sisters, Terri Johnson, Big Sis Roberson, Mary Clay, Sam McCormick, Rose Zinkann, and Jo-Anne Clark.
A graveside memorial service with full military honors will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, June 24, at Dayton National Cemetery. Celebrant Katie Mackoway will be officiating the services. If desired, contributions may be made to the World Wildlife Fund or Cincinnati Nature Center. Stubbs-Conner Funeral Home in Waynesville is serving the family. Condolences at www.stubbsconner.com.
