Dorothy Louise Gompf's Obituary
GOMPF, Dorothy Louise, age 92, of Waynesville and formerly of Bellbrook, passed away Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at Hospice of Dayton.
Dorothy was a prep cook at the 1776 Inn Restaurant in Waynesville for almost ten years. With her husband, James, they owned and ran an antique store in Waynesville for several years. She was an attendee of the Waynesville First Baptist Church for many years. Later, she became a member of the Bethany Baptist Church in Clarksville. She taught Vacation Bible School and was very proud to be able to have several of her grandchildren come through her class. Dorothy knew the love of Jesus Christ. She knew Jesus Christ as her personal savior, which gave the family peace.
Sweet, kind, and gentle, Dorothy had a meek, loving, and giving personality. She didn’t have a bad bone in her body. One of her passions was collecting different trinkets. She had an extensive collection of antiques, angels, dishes, ceramic birds, glassware, dolls, and jewelry. If it was shiny and sparkly, it would catch her eye. Dorothy looked forward to her trips to the Goodwill and finding a new treasure. Her life-long passion was reading books. She was well known at the Mary L. Cook Library in Waynesville, where she would fill her bags to the brim with books to read. Some of her favorite genres were westerns and mystery novels. She was very proud of her family. She looked forward to Thanksgiving and Christmas, the big family dinners that brought everyone together every year. She was an incredible cook, making the best chicken and noodles, French toast, homemade pie crusts, and cinnamon rolls. She cherished Nickie’s annual tea parties. Among many things, she will be remembered for her love of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She would play games with her grandchildren on the kitchen floor. Her favorite game to play with them was marbles.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James F. Gompf, in 2011; son-in-law, Larry Cline; parents, Llewellyn and Ellen Juanita Wiliams; five brothers, Frank, Harold, Don, John, and Bob Williams; and two sisters, Margie Coffman and Shirley Holtgreven. She is survived by her son, James “Jimmy” (Patti) F. Gompf, Jr.; two daughters, Nicola “Nickie” (Roy) Bayes and Bobbie M. Oney; six grandchildren Michael (Krista) Gompf, Jonathan “Johnnie” Gompf, Tiffany Bayes, Taylor (Sarah) Bayes, Travis (Alivia) Bayes, and Kelly (Jacob) Bowser; 16 great-grandchildren Kenzie (David) Atehortua, Isaac Gompf, Gavin Gompf, Ulric Gompf, Ayana Brooks, James Brooks, Terrell Brooks, Kalisha Brooks, Griffin Bayes, Adaline Bayes, Elliott Bayes, Myla Bays, Bennett Bayes, Remi Bayes, Ivy Bowser, and one on the way; and two great-great-grandchildren, Evina and Noia Atehortua.
