Douglas Stephen Campbell Sr.'s Obituary
CAMPBELL, Douglas Stephen, Sr., age 76, of Waynesville, passed away Saturday, May 10, 2025, at Chamberlin Healthcare Center in Cincinnati.
Douglas honorably served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was stationed at Fort Belvoir, Fairfax County, Virginia. He earned his Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art and a Master's of Industrial Design from Pratt Institute. He had a passion for airplanes and art, which allowed his job to be one he cherished. For over 20 years, he had experience in exhibit and visual communications in the private and public sectors, developing creative marketing strategies for manufacturers of consumer products and museum packages for large and small projects. He did extensive work with large corporations and major museums across the United States. He was known for his industrial design packages for the tool industries and the medical supply industries. In addition, he developed signage programs for major corporations, federal buildings, and public arenas. For his wonderful talent in graphic design and communications, he won a multitude of awards. Some of them were the Air Force Organization Excellence Awards (1971, 1981, and 1983), Air Force Association's Hoyt S. Vandenberg Award, Air Force Wright Memorial Chapter’s Unit Presidential Citation, AV Medium Award, and Sustained Superior Performance Award from 1981 – 1982. He officially retired in 2014, after 40 years of federal civilian service from the National Museum of the United States Air Force, as the Division Chief of Special Exhibits.
He was also very active in the community. He was a member of the Waynesville Preservation Club, Waynesville Historical Society, and the Waynesville Chamber of Commerce. In addition, he was a member of the Industrial Designers Society of America and the Smithsonian. He was a past youth group leader for St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Franklin. He was currently a member and had attended Fairhaven Church for many years.
With a jovial and teddy bear personality, Douglas was as sweet as he could be. Those traits allowed him to be the perfect volunteer at hospice. He loved soccer and coaching. He was very proud to be one of the members who brought the soccer program to Wayne Local Schools. He was a past Springboro Select Soccer Association Coach, a youth soccer coach from 1978 -1979, and Waynesville High School Varsity Soccer Coach from 1987 – 1989. He was well known for his meticulous yard and garden. He loved doing yard work and making sure it was perfect. Woodworking was another one of his favorite hobbies. He enjoyed making chairs, clocks, cupboards, tables, and anything he could design. He had a collection of carpentry tools from over the years, which helped in creating reproductions, especially Shaker-style furniture. Among many things, he will be remembered for the love and pride he had for his wife and his two boys.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Thomas Anthes Campbell and Anna Lorenz Campbell; and one brother, Thomas “Pete” Campbell Jr. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 55 years, Pamela A. Campbell; two sons, Douglas (Alisha) Campbell Jr. and Chad (Beth) Campbell; six grandchildren, Ian, Ethan, Rachel, Alexander, Addison, and Alivia; and one brother, Bruce Stuart Campbell.
