Douglas C. Furnas' Obituary
FURNAS, Douglas C., age 76, of Waynesville, passed away Wednesday, August 14, 2024.
Doug graduated from Waynesville High School, class of ’66. He honorably served in the United States Air Force during Vietnam. He worked a combined 33 years for the Village of Waynesville Water Department. When he retired, Doug was serving as the Public Works Director for the Village of Waynesville. He also volunteered for 21 years at the Wayne Township Fire Department. In addition, he was an active member and former commander of the Waynesville American Legion Post 615. He attended Crossview Christian Church in Waynesville.
Giving, humble, and service-oriented, Doug was caring, especially to his wife. He greatly enjoyed reading. While his daughter was younger, they often read the same books and bonded over the reading material. Always loving and supportive of his wife, Doug was known to drive his wife to a casino so that she could enjoy the games while he sat in the car for hours reading. He had a talent for building and upgrading computers, which he enjoyed doing for others. He also enjoyed watching TV, especially crime dramas and national news. When he was younger, Doug enjoyed visiting Key West with his side of the family, which he always talked fondly about later in life. Among many things, he will be remembered for a lifetime of service. Specifically, Doug served his country during Vietnam, his community on the fire department and the public works department, as a volunteer in the American Legion, and as a caring spouse to his wife, Kathy.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathy, in 2021; his parents, Willard and Mildred Furnas; and his brother, Kenneth. He is survived by his three children, Dale (Laura) Stacy, Matthew (Andrea) Bly, and Laura (Kurtis) Servis; six grandchildren, Mikayla, Ben, Drew, Emma, Waylon, and Wyatt; sister-in-law, Tammy (Richard) Gibson; nieces, Morgan Gibson and Madison (Colton) Coomer; and great-nephew, Koa.
Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Thursday, August 22, at Stubbs-Conner Funeral Home in Waynesville. Burial will be in Miami Cemetery, Corwin. Chaplain Anthony Payton will be officiating the services. The family will receive friends 11 AM - 2 PM Thursday at the funeral home. If desired and in Doug’s memory, contributions may be made to the Wayne Township Fire Department.
The family would like to thank Doug’s hospice care team from Affinity Care of Ohio (Jill, Jon, Michelle, Rebecca and Anthony) and all those who cared for Doug at River Oaks Care Center. Condolences at www.stubbsconner.com.
