Glen Smith's Obituary
SMITH, Glen, age 95, lifelong resident of Waynesville, passed away Saturday, November 30, 2024, at his residence.
Glen graduated from Waynesville High School, class of ’47. He proudly served in the United States Army. Early in his life, he worked at NCR for several years, followed by 20 additional years at Thoroughbred Dog Food in Corwin. During his final years with the dog food manufacturing company, he co-founded Waynesville Furniture and Gifts, which he ran from 1969 to 2016. Along with his wife, they ran the furniture business in Waynesville for 47 years and became well-known in the community. Always hard-working, he also ran a mail carrier route and volunteered on the Wayne Township Fire and Rescue Squad. Glen was known for being directly involved with getting the EMS side of the department formally organized. Notably, during those very early years, the furniture store had two phone lines, one serving as the dispatch for the rescue squad and the other for the furniture business.
Glen had a fun habit of always saying he was terrible when asked how he was doing. On the contrary, he was funny, friendly, outgoing, caring, loving, fun to be around, resourceful, and highly energetic. He greatly enjoyed going out searching for antiques, attending gift shows, bowling in the local school’s bowling league, and spending time with his grandchildren. In his early years, he sang in a barbershop quartet called the Villageaires, which traveled around to participate in many events. Glen always reminisced about the times they got to sing on the Ted Mack Show and singing the National Anthem before a Reds game at Crosley Field. He loved spending time outside caring for his house and yard, which he was doing recently. Due to his immense work ethic, and even into his mid-90s, he was up on the roof assisting with new shingles on his home, up on a ladder cleaning his gutters, and offering assistance across the street at the cemetery with cutting up trees that fell during a storm.
Glen and the family had a tradition of boating on Dale Hollow Lake. Initially, they traveled to the lake each year in early June, spending fun-filled days water skiing, jumping off the Wolf River cliffs, and tying up with several other Waynesville family boaters who all traveled together. Eventually, they purchased a cabin near Sunset Marina and Resort, where they enjoyed outings on the lake with family. Days at the cabin and on the lake became one of Glen’s favorite traditions. He also enjoyed the tradition of visiting Amish Country with his family, primarily for shopping, eating in the local restaurants, and taking the kids to the animal farm. Driving his old Mustang in the local 4th of July parade was also something he looked forward to each year.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Amanda Nicole; his parents, Harry and Ada Smith; and seven siblings, Roy, Bernice, Meb, Bud, Janice, Clyde, Evelyn, Esther, and Everett. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Sally; four children, Jacki England, Larry (Sharon) Smith, Vicki Smith, and Brenda (Jeff) Sergent; four grandchildren, Ashlea (Kyle) Back, Austin (Casey) England, Matthew Jacobs, and Thomas (Amanda) Sergent; and seven great-grandchildren, Hudson, Harper, Isaiah, Hope, Van, Gavin, and Sparrow;
The family will receive friends from 11 AM - 1 PM on Saturday, December 7, at Stubbs-Conner Funeral Home in Waynesville. A life celebration service will immediately follow the visitation at 1 PM on Saturday at the funeral home, followed by a committal service and burial at Miami Cemetery in Corwin. If desired, contributions may be made to the Wayne Township Fire & Rescue Squad or the Waynesville United Methodist Church. Condolences at www.stubbsconner.com.
