Howard C. Dixon's Obituary
DIXON, Howard C., age 83, of Xenia, and formerly of Clarksville and Lebanon, passed away Sunday, December 22, 2024, at Kettering Hospital.
Howard honorably served in the United States Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He retired as a maintenance supervisor at the Lebanon Correctional Institute after nearly 30 years of service.
Caring, supportive, loving, and outgoing, Howard was often ornery in a fun way, always willing to have conversations with others, and meticulous regarding organization and maintaining things. During his younger days, he enjoyed going out dancing with his wife. While his daughter was growing up, Howard enjoyed coaching her youth sports teams, which continued through her high school years with the Varsity softball team. Once the grandchildren came along, he never missed their games and events. Always family-oriented, he enjoyed family hikes and walks in the creek, complete with rock skipping contests. He taught his daughter to fish, which was one of Howard’s favorite hobbies throughout his life. One eventful year, he and his daughter set a local record for the number of crappie caught during the season. During his later years, he went fishing with his work buddies. He also enjoyed hunting on his brother’s property, vegetable gardening, and traveling with his wife. He and his wife traveled via motorcycle on the Blue Ridge Parkway and to Gatlinburg, which became a bit of a tradition. He also enjoyed the tradition of spending the winter months at Lake Okeechobee in Florida, which included fishing excursions. During their winter trips to Florida, they also enjoyed dining out in the local restaurants, sightseeing, and airboat rides. One of Howard’s favorite traditions during the younger days was wearing their freshly pressed jeans and nice boots out to dinner on Friday nights at the local Ponderosa restaurant. Those dinners created lots of fond memories during Howard’s later years of reflection.
Howard is survived by his wife of 51 years, Gwendolyn; his daughter, Jennifer (Chris) Enright; son Timmy (Jodi) Dixon; five grandchildren, Christopher “Caleb” Enright, Madison (Evan) Ball, Josh (Trevor) Belt, Jonathan (Corie) Dixon, and Taylor Dixon (Nick Eucker); three great-grandchildren, Harley, Flynn, and Oakland; two brothers, John Dixon and Gary (Wanda) Dixon; and one sister, Debbie (Chuck) Reeder. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Elsie Dixon; one son, Tony Dixon; three brothers, Gordon, David, and Mike Dixon; and one sister, Donna Gallion.
The family will receive friends from 10 AM to Noon on Monday, December 30, at Stubbs-Conner Funeral Home in Waynesville.
