Hubert D. Phillips' Obituary
PHILLIPS, Hubert D., age 93, of Waynesville and formerly of Oregonia, passed away Sunday, July 19, 2020 at his residence. He was born July 14, 1927 to Newton and Nellie Phillips in Cookeville, Tennessee.
Hubert was a WWII veteran who served in both the Army and the Navy. He worked as a maintenance supervisor in both private businesses and city/county entities over the years, mainly in Pasco County, Florida and Vandalia, Ohio.
Quick-witted, hilarious, family oriented, and honest to a fault, Hubert was giving, generous, and had a great attitude. Quite the handyman, he enjoyed woodworking and could build and fix anything. He also enjoyed fishing and vegetable gardening. His fishing days were mostly done in the ocean while living in Florida and in ponds and lakes while living in Ohio. He was an avid reader with Stephen King and Larry McMurtry novels being his favorite authors. Among many things, he will be remembered for his love of John Wayne movies and memorabilia. He even had a room dedicated to John Wayne. The times when family would gather to celebrate his birthday each year will always be remembered as some of the fond memories they had with Hubert.
He was preceded in death by one granddaughter Michelle Phillips; his parents; four brothers Earl, Kenny, Donnie, and Junior Phillips; and one sister Dimple Weaver. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Cloteen; five children Richard (Linda) Phillips, Anthony (Donna) Phillips, Melony Phillips, Mark (Kim) Phillips, and Scott (Mary Ann) Phillips; 13 grandchildren Nicole, Jessica, Jacob, Stephanie, Tony, Brian, Krissy, Joseph, Kevin, Brittany, Kennedy, Holly, and Colton; 12 great grandchildren; and one sister Dorothy Hampton.
Due to the restrictions of COVID-19, the family is planning a service to celebrate Hubert’s life in the near future. Additional information will be available when the arrangements have been finalized. Stubbs-Conner Funeral Home in Waynesville is serving the family. Condolences at www.stubbsconner.com.
