James "Jim" S. Farley Jr.'s Obituary
FARLEY, James “Jim” S., Jr., age 90, of Harveysburg, passed away Thursday, September 18, 2025, at Kettering Health Miamisburg with his family by his side.
Jim was born in Katherine, West Virginia, on May 13, 1935, to James and Ocie Farley. He was raised with three brothers and sisters, and the family eventually moved to Ohio. He retired in 1985, after working in construction for 15 years. Working in construction, he was constantly working with numbers, which helped him become a math genius. He was proud of earning his 50th-year membership in the Laborers Local 534.
Caring, loving, and constant, Jim was always the first person to show up when you needed help. He made it apparent that family was the most important thing in his life. He treated several like he was their dad, bringing them under his care and taking care of them. Acting as a dad in a situation when he didn’t have to be, earned him respect with others. He believed in living a life with pure honesty and being someone that anyone could rely on. It became a tradition to travel to Ross County every weekend after Thanksgiving for deer hunting season. He also enjoyed hunting rabbits and squirrels. He cherished the many times he was able to shoot clay pigeons on the farm with family. He looked forward to fishing in Cowan Lake with his family and friends. He had acquired a large amount of fishing equipment over the years. Every spring and summer, he would travel to visit his family in Tennessee and hunt mushrooms, help harvest their corn, and can and freeze items for the winter months. In addition, he loved gardening at his home as well. He grew a variety of different vegetables with a special section for Dipper Gourds. He used the gourds to create bird houses. He was also a beekeeper until he became allergic to them from all their stings.
Working in construction helped him develop long-lasting woodworking skills. He loved creating roadrunner whirlgigs, shelves with heart cut out of them, bookshelves, beds, chairs, trash cans, and magazine racks. He became so talented that he sold these handcrafted, unique items. He enjoyed watching NASCAR and had accumulated a variety of Jeff Gordon memorabilia. In addition, he also collected Avon cologne bottles and German Beer Steins. He would regularly play specific numbers on lottery tickets, always hoping to hit it big. His love of collecting coins was passed down to his children. He enjoyed watching Joel Osteen on TV. Among many things, he will be remembered for the love and pride he had for his family.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary M. Farley, in 2020; his son, James Stanley Farley III; his daughter, Vickie Farley; son-in-law, Mike Greer; one grandchild, Rhonda Langford; one great-grandson, Joseph Langford; his parents, James and Ocie Farley; two brothers, Julian (Doris) Farley and Charles Farley; two sisters, Wilda (Jason) Frantz and Barbara (Gerald) Blevins; brother-in-law, Harold “Shorty” Horn; and sister-in-law, Brenda Farley. He is survived by four daughters, Brenda Greer, Mary (Rick) Hairfield, Tina Farley-Huey; and Tomi Farley; nine grandchildren, Stephanie Miller, Nina Hairfield, Michael (Justine) Greer; Nathan Greer (Beth), Richard Huey, Kenny (Christa) Huey, Christy (Arley) Branham, Julie (Keith) Jones, and James (Amy) Lee Farley; 28 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jiles (Sharon) Farley and Dale Farley; one sister, Ruth Horn; and two sisters-in-law, Goldie (Tim) Howard and Sandy McDonald.
