James M. Rains' Obituary
RAINS, James M., age 87, of Cincinnati, passed away Friday, June 13, 2025.
James was born on June 29, 1937, in Corbin, Kentucky, to William Garrett and Rebecca (née Richmond) Rains.
He graduated from Woodbine High School in 1955. In 1958, he started working at Ford Motor Company in Sharonville, Ohio. He worked there for 33 years, retiring in 1991.
Family-oriented and attentive, James was caring and a friend to everyone he knew. James was dedicated to his family, affectionately known as Papaw, Pappy, and Old Papaw by his beloved granddaughters and great-granddaughter. He took great pride in attending his daughters’ and granddaughters’ school and sporting events, providing his support and love for his family. A lifelong fan of sports, James had a passion for the Kentucky Wildcats basketball team, often watching their games with great enthusiasm. He also cheered for the Cincinnati Bengals and the Cincinnati Reds.
From a young age, he exemplified hard work and commitment, beginning his career logging alongside his brother and father at the age of seven. This early experience instilled in him a deep appreciation for hard work, a value he carried throughout his life. James was well known for his willingness to help others, a trait that endeared him to everyone. James will be remembered for his love, kindness, and the countless memories he created with his family.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Garrett and Rebecca Rains; three brothers, Joe, Walter, and Howard Rains; and his sister, Myrtle Phillips. He is survived by his two daughters, Buffie (Dale) Dennis and Hollie (Jeremy) Adams; four grandchildren, Sydney (Jason) Long, Lily Dennis, Jamie Adams, and Amelia Dennis; one great-granddaughter, Juniper Long; former wife, Averil Rains; long-term companion, Rena Toole; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 10 AM - 12 PM on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at Stubbs-Conner Funeral Home. A funeral service will immediately follow the visitation at 12 PM on Saturday at the funeral home, followed by burial in Miami Valley Memory Gardens. Condolences at www.stubbsconner.com.
