James "Kirby" Ramey's Obituary
RAMEY, James “Kirby”, age 89, of Waynesville, passed away Saturday, June 21, 2025.
Kirby graduated from Miamisburg High School, class of ’54. He honorably served in the United States Navy. He furthered his education by earning an Associate’s Degree from Long Beach City College in California. Kirby retired in 1989 as a Central Office Technician from Ameritech after 34 years in the telecommunications industry.
Wise, intelligent, caring, and humble, Kirby was highly knowledgeable and the voice of reason. He was quite creative and artistic, which led to a lifetime love of woodworking, ultimately creating amazing works of art. Of the many pieces he crafted, he carved a beautiful 500-pound bear that is currently displayed in his son’s barber shop. In addition, he could fix just about anything and loved painting and working on craft projects. He loved learning new things, which also led to a love of reading. In particular, he focused on historical literature and material from which he could gain knowledge. For example, he was always fascinated by old steam engine trains, so he read several books on the subject. His other hobbies included fishing and boating. Well-rounded, Kirby loved to cook, with a particular focus on gourmet foods and artistic presentation. He was exceptionally skilled at preparing stir-fry meals using his specialized woks and high-quality prep supplies.
Along with several Waynesville families, Kirby and his family enjoyed boating trips each summer to Dale Hollow Lake. They always stayed at Star Point Resort, enjoying the small family-run restaurant and marina, along with long days out on the water. In addition, Kirby and his wife enjoyed playing cards on weekends, often with their friends from Dale Hollow. Always willing to lend a helping hand, he volunteered at Miami Cemetery in Corwin for several summers mowing the grass. Among many things, he will be remembered for his vast collection of wood carvings and the love he had for his family. Notably, the bond he shared with his son will never be forgotten.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alford Ramey and Ruth Penwell, and his brother, Alford “Jack” Ramey. He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Beverly; son, James “Matt” (Chrissy) Ramey; two grandchildren, Brianna and Lucas; and his sister, Snooks Clark.
The family will receive friends from 11 AM to 1 PM on Thursday, June 26, at Stubbs-Conner Funeral Home in Waynesville. A celebration of life service will immediately follow the visitation at 1 PM on Thursday, with Steve Taylor officiating the services. Burial will be in Miami Cemetery, Corwin. If desired and in Kirby’s honor, contributions may be made to Miami Cemetery, 6379 Corwin Avenue, Waynesville, Ohio 45068. Condolences at www.stubbsconner.com.
