Lawrence C. Evans Sr.'s Obituary
EVANS, Lawrence C., Sr., age 99, of Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia; and formerly of Dayton, Ohio and Orlando, Florida, passed away Sunday, July 28, 2024, at The Rosewood Assisted Living in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia.
Lawrence was born in Dayton, Ohio, on July 20, 1925. He was part of the greatest generation. He proudly served in the United States Navy during WWII. He worked at Scott and Williams Inc. for 25 years and then was a school bus driver in Orange County, Florida, for an additional 15 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post #1 in Laconia, New Hampshire, for 78 years, Odd Fellows Chocorua Lodge #51 in Lakeport, New Hampshire, for 77 years, Odd Fellows Winnipissogee Lodge #7 in New Hampshire, Odd Fellows Encampment #9 in New Hampshire for 77 years, and Elks Lodge #91 of Chattanooga, Tennessee for 66 years. He was a devoted Masonic member as well. He was a member in Chattanooga, Tennessee, of the Masonic Order Brainerd Lodge #736 for 55 years, the Scottish Rite for 54 years, York Rite – Lookout Commandery #14 for 53 years, York Rite- John Baily Nickin Chapter #49 for 53 years, York Rite- Mt. Morian Council #95 for 53 years, and the Shrine- Alambrah Temple for 54 years. In addition, he was a member of the Fairway’s Country Club in Orlando, Florida, for 42 years, the Greater Orlando Bowling Association for 42 years, and the Central Florida Coin Club for 19 years.
One of his passions was bowling. He started setting pins in the bowling alley as a teenager, and continued bowling up until three years ago. He had participated in two local leagues in Orlando, Florida. For 52 consecutive years, he was part of the ABC / USBC Bowling Tournament and the league secretary for many years. He enjoyed rounds of golf with his family and friends. After retiring, he joined several golf leagues at his home course and continued to play into his 90’s. He was an avid coin collector, mostly of American currency, but he also collected several foreign currency items.
He loved taking photos of anything and everything. Most importantly, he enjoyed getting together with people together and taking pictures to cherish the memories they were making. He cherished the times his family and friends would visit and when he could travel to see them.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his wife, Helen P. Evans; his parents, James and Hazel Evans; two brothers, James R. Evans Jr. and William R. Evans; and two sisters, Mildred Hall and Francis Armstrong. He is survived by his two sons, Lawrence “Larry” (Debbie) Evans Jr. and Darrell Evans; one step-son, Thomas Plemens; one grandson, Justin Plemens; one sister, Jeannie Fetviet; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 12 - 2 pm, Monday, August 5, at Stubbs-Conner Funeral Home in Waynesville, Ohio. Funeral services with Masonic honors will immediately follow the visitation at 2 pm at the funeral home. Burial will be at Miami Cemetery in Corwin, Ohio with full military honors.
