Marilyn J. Bowden's Obituary
BOWDEN, Marilyn J. age 90, of Miamisburg and formerly of Waynesville and North Myrtle Beach, SC, passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at CareSprings of Miamisburg.
Marilyn was a 1950 graduate of West Carrollton High School. She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Waynesville and a volunteer at Kettering Hospital.
Marilyn is described as an artistic, classy lady and an excellent homemaker. She was a loving wife to George J. Bowden and a stay-at-home mother to her daughters, Melody and Georgette. Marilyn was known for her sophisticated sense of fashion and style. She was a skilled interior decorator, and her home was always elegant and immaculate. She loved horticulture and created many beautiful gardens, featuring colorful, meticulously landscaped flowers. In addition to her home and gardens, Marilyn enjoyed looking after the birds and butterflies that visited her plants and flowers. Marilyn was a student of all things artistic and a very talented painter. She created numerous oil canvases, as well as pastels and watercolor designs. She was a long-time student of the University of Cincinnati retired Professor of Art, Elmer Ruff, and presented her artwork at numerous shows. Marilyn was a gifted needle artist creating embroidery quilts and knitting socks, sweaters, afghans, and Christmas stockings for her grandchildren and even some for her great-grandchildren. She enjoyed stitching and knitting each Wednesday afternoon with her sewing circle.
Marilyn had a great love for family and friends. She cherished family traditions and loved passing them on to her children and grandchildren. She was married to George J. Bowden (her high school sweetheart) for over 71 years. She adored him and was proud of the longevity of her marriage. Marilyn enjoyed attending church and felt the presence and comfort of God in her life. She taught her daughters the importance of sisterhood and was proud of their love of God and each other. She and George had a large loving extended family, their traditions and customs were celebrated by picnics, reunions, weddings, christenings, and yearly trips to Myrtle Beach, to name a few. Marilyn was a good cook and enjoyed preparing special meals for her family and friends. She relished sharing her recipes and taught her granddaughters how to replicate her favorite dishes. She remained close to a group of high school friends, even into her late 80s, and continued meeting with them for an occasional lunch. Marilyn and her husband, George, had a large group of friends they met while visiting and living in North Myrtle Beach. These friendships continued for many decades and brought great joy to their lives. A significant love of Marilyn’s life was her beloved golden retriever, Carolina Belle. She was a beautiful companion dog that brought much joy to Marilyn’s life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Junior Bowden, in 2021; her parents, Jack Lancaster and Virginia Flannagan; and one brother, David Pierce. She is survived by her two daughters, Melody (Donald) Turner and Georgette Bradstreet, and four grandchildren, Nicole (Tim) Cerwinsky, Joseph Nordheim, Lance (Alexandria) Bradstreet, and Jessica (Doug) Wagner. She had eleven great-grandchildren, Codey, Patience, Dominique, Jacob, Parker, Maxwell, Evelyn, Lorelei, Charlotte, George, and Cadence; four great-great-grandchildren; one brother, William (Glenda) Pierce; one sister, Malinda Schroeder; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends 10 - 11 AM Saturday, February 4, 2023, immediately followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM, all at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Springboro. Father Jim Manning will be celebrating Marilyn’s life. Stubbs-Conner Funeral Home in Waynesville is serving the family. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, West Carrollton.
