Nora Powell's Obituary
POWELL, Nora, age 82, of Wilmington and formerly of Oregonia, passed away Friday, September 27, 2024, at her residence.
Nora was a member of the Old Regular Baptist Church in Cow Creek, Kentucky.
Thoughtful, patient, gentle, caring, giving, and always cheerful, Nora was calm-tempered with an immense faith in God. She was always reading her Bible and would start over after reading it cover to cover. She also enjoyed listening to the local country radio station on a daily basis. On the weekends, she watched RFD-TV, The Cowboy Channel, which became a fond tradition. Working on jigsaw and crossword puzzles and spending time with family were also fun hobbies for Nora. While the kids were growing up, she loved them being home, and Nora would cry every year when it was time for them to go back to school. Also during her younger days, she enjoyed vegetable gardening. In addition, she hosted the holidays at her home for family and was known to cook delicious feasts and make the day special. During her birthday week, her sisters would visit and spend the week with her, which was one of her favorite traditions. They would cook together, clean everything up, and then plan what they were going to cook next. Nora always looked forward to her birthday because of her “sister week” tradition. Growing up in a large family with very basic means, Nora developed a mentality of needing little to get by and maintaining things beyond their normal lifespan. One year, when it was time for her to renew her driver’s license, she got into her car to head to the BMV and decided to look at her previous license. She realized that she was wearing the same shirt, which was a testament to her keeping things nice year after year. Among many things, she will be remembered for her love of her family and her faithful habit of always reading her Bible.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, in 2012; her parents, Mose and Viola Herald; two brothers, Wilson and Virgil Herald; and two sisters, Cora Caudill and Vena Herald. She is survived by her son, John “Randy” (Stacey) Powell; daughter, Deborah “Debbie” Shutts; six grandchildren, Jeremiah Shutts, Brandy Shutts, Jenna (Tim) Johnson, Bethany Powell, Kenley (Bri) Powell, and Josiah Powell; one brother, Walter (Phyllis) Herald; and five sisters, Linda (Kerwin) Kerr, Nancy (Ron) Bussell, Wanda Wright, Judy (Mike) Begley, Joyce (Mike) Baker.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, October 2, at Stubbs-Conner Funeral Home in Waynesville. Burial will be in Miami Cemetery, Corwin. Pastor Joe Shutts will officiate. The family will receive friends from 11 AM to 1 PM on Wednesday at the funeral home. Condolences at www.stubbsconner.com.
