Top Ten Things Norm Lindauer Loved
By Bob McCulloch, son-in-law
1. Edith – For all of the good-natured “grief” he received from Edith, Norm knew he was a lucky man. Edith was the love of his life and he cherished her until her dying day.
2. Family – his and Edith’s parents/grandparents, his and her siblings and their children, his own children and their spouses, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He particularly loved watching his grandchildren participating at their school activities.
3. Playing and playing well at horseshoes and other sports. He kept a mental record of his current “ringer percentage”. He was amazingly still athletic in his later years, very coordinated – in fact less than a month ago he outperformed Nick, Rita and I at billiards
4. Abraham Lincoln – Dale was Abe’s birthplace and of this Norm was very proud, often chatting up strangers with the story of youthful Abe
5. Hoosier pride – Dale was in his blood and no matter how long he lived in OH, he was forever a Hoosier (and “Brars”, as he jokingly called them, be damned)
6. Solitude – although a very social person, he loved being alone and enjoying his quiet time to have a smoke and enjoy a refreshment, especially after a long day at work or in the garden
7. Reading the daily newspaper, the Cincinnati Reds and all sports (with special emphasis on any Hoosiers who were excelling – like all star 3B Scott Rolen who hailed from Dale)
8. His and Edith’s German heritage – Norm retained much of the German language and often lapsed into German to describe things. Quite often, the night before we were about to return home from a visit, he would say to me, “Morgen fliegen die feigl” – or tomorrow the birds fly
9. Memories of his past – both he and his brother Hubert were amazing in the detailed memories of their past, names and dates still intact after over eighty years had passed!
10. His daily walks – we saw him a month ago and he was still walking for exercise. He had slowed down a bit but learned to sit down and rest a bit in between stretches. He never lost his love of the outdoors.##imported-begin##Bob McCulloch##imported-end##
