Penny F. Downard's Obituary
DOWNARD, Penny F., age 58, of Waynesville, passed away Saturday, March 26, 2022, at her residence with her family by her side.
Penny graduated from Waynesville High School, class of ’82. She retired in 2003 from Norfleet Brown & Petkewicz after 15 years of dedicated service to the company.
Sweet, humorous, and all-around beautiful, Penny lived life to the fullest, loved to make others laugh and have fun, had a big heart, was a joy to be around, and genuinely cared for everyone she knew. She greatly enjoyed arts and crafts, playing games with family and friends, and traveling. Her favorite travel destination was a yearly trip to St. Augustine in Florida, whereby she enjoyed a rental near the beach, where she hung out with friends and family on the deck of the home and at the pool. For many years, her mother joined the family on the trips, which allowed Penny to truly enjoy her company in the warmth of the Florida sunshine, especially during the later years of her mother’s life. Some of Penny’s fondest memories included all the local seafood restaurants, including her favorite, Mango Mangos, for the coconut shrimp. She was an excellent cook, most notably when she prepared her homemade pizzas and seafood gumbo for her immediate family and her big antipasto platter when she hosted parties. She always encouraged her children to try a vast array of foods due to her love of food and ingredients. Christmas was one of her favorite times of the year. Passed down from generations above, the Jones family celebrated the Christmas season and Christmas Day to the fullest, which she wholeheartedly carried on. She used white cotton for snow and decorated little villages throughout the house with little elf and Frosty Friends figurines, which she collected. Among many things, she will be remembered for how much she enjoyed home decorating in general and her love of animals, especially her loving companion, Stella.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Sandra Jones. She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Darryl; two sons, Alexander and Arick Downard (fiancé Erin Good); two brothers, Brian (Margie) Jones and Michael (Pauline) Jones; and one sister, Beth (Dirk) Rossback.
The family will receive friends 11 AM - 2 PM Saturday, April 2, at Stubbs-Conner Funeral Home in Waynesville. A celebration of life service will immediately follow the visitation on Saturday at 2 PM at the funeral home. Celebrant Katie Mackoway will be officiating the services.
