Richard Dwight Simmons' Obituary
SIMMONS, Richard Dwight, age 67, of Waynesville, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, July 8, 2023.
When Richard was growing up, he enjoyed playing basketball, was a semi-professional football player for the Dayton Cowboys, and was a Cincinnati Bengals fan. He was an animal lover at heart but never really showed that side. He graduated from Waynesville High School, Miami University, and Duke University. He was a life- long- learner. He had depths of knowledge and could become engaged in any subject. He appreciated a good cigar and was known for his pop-culture and lyric references. He enjoyed watching the stock market and doing day trading. Traveling was one of his ultimate favorites. He relished working in Kingston, Jamaica, in the ’90s and early 2000s. While living in Chicago, he fell in love with the city and all that it had to offer. His dream was to one day take his kids to Ireland. Family was an essential part of his life, and he looked forward to events when the whole family would come together, especially if it involved his mother’s cooking. Richard was brilliant, charismatic, outspoken, and had an unforgettable personality. His originality and uniqueness defied expectations and allowed him always to provide the best advice.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Mildred Simmons, and one sister, Brenda Mills. He is survived by two sons, Andrew (McKenzie) Simmons and Alex Simmons; two grandchildren, Ruth and Clark Simmons; one brother, Lanney (Joy) Simmons; one sister, Debbie (Randy) Church; his niece Chrystal (Brian) Robinson; and many other nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be 7 PM Wednesday, July 12, at Stubbs-Conner Funeral Home in Waynesville. Dale McCloud will be officiating the services. The family will receive friends 6 - 7 PM Wednesday at the funeral home. If desired, contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Condolences at www.stubbsconner.com.
