Sylvia J. Tallentire's Obituary
TALLENTIRE, Sylvia J., age 86, of Columbus and formerly of Cleveland Heights and Lebanon, passed away Sunday, July 2, 2023, at Mount Carmel St. Ann's Hospital in Columbus.
Sylvia graduated from Stivers High School in Dayton. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from Earlham College and a Master's Degree at Westminster College in Pennsylvania. Always learning, Sylvia earned 45 hours toward the qualification of a Ph.D. After teaching for 31 years, she retired from Shaker Heights City Schools in 1992. She was a member of the Normandy United Methodist Church in Centerville.
Intelligent, hardworking, and talented, Sylvia was outgoing and will always be remembered for her sense of adventure and unforgettable smile. Her hobbies included crafting and sewing projects. While her kids were growing up, she volunteered with the Scouts for both, mainly to support their achievements within the group. For 20 years, she hosted a pre-Christmas family gathering at North Bend State Park in West Virginia, which became one of her favorite traditions.
Sylvia's greatest passion was adventure trips to the far reaches of the world. Like many parents, when raising their children, Sylvia and Don created a tradition of traveling around the United States in a camper with their kids. After retiring, however, Sylvia and Don took their travel experiences to another level. They were proud of the fact that they visited all 50 states, each of the seven continents, and over 150 countries. Notably, they traveled 6,000 miles on the Siberian Railway, were enamored with the beautiful colors of the Arctic and Antarctica, visited Europe and the Orient several times, explored the many animals and unique islands of the Galapagos, cruised through seas of the Mediterranean and Alaska, and were the 66th ship to travel from east to west on a Russian ice breaker through the Northwest Passage in the Arctic Ocean. Their travels were so impressive and extensive that they were often asked to participate in speaking engagements while planning their next trip. In addition, Dayton Daily News wrote a story on their adventures several years ago.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Juanita Woollard. She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Howard "Don"; one son, Jeffrey Tallentire (Kory); one daughter, Julie (Charles) Radabaugh; four grandchildren, Beth (Greg) Fetterhoff, Brittany (Kirk) Cooper, Kyle (Sierra) Radabaugh, and Tanya (Jacobi) Thomas; 12 great-grandchildren, Noah, Ella, Vera, Trevor, Tyson, Trent, Terrell, Myah, Mason, Reese, River, and Jacobi-Jr.; and one sister, Janice Whited.
Funeral services will be 1 PM Saturday, July 8, at Stubbs-Conner Funeral Home in Waynesville. Rev. Harvey Smith will be officiating the services. Burial will be at Miami Cemetery in Corwin. The family will receive friends 12 PM -1 PM Saturday at the funeral home. In memory of Sylvia, in lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity or support a local food bank.
