Wanda J. Hubbell's Obituary
HUBBELL, Wanda Jean (née Marcum, Hoak), age 82, passed away peacefully at her home in Waynesville, Ohio, on Monday, July 13, 2026.
Wanda was born on December 24, 1943, in Waynesville, Ohio, to Albert ‘Ray’ and Alberta Marcum. She never met her father, as he was deployed to the Philippine Theater during WWII before she was born, and killed in action during the Allied Liberation campaign. Ray did see a picture of Wanda before he died. She and her older sister (Linda) were cared for by Findley and Laura Brown for many years until her mother remarried and they were adopted by her stepfather, Benton Hoak. She was raised in the Quaker Church and continued into the Methodist Church later in life. She was right with the Lord when she passed.
Wanda spent her life in Waynesville. She graduated from Waynesville High School in 1961 and married her high school sweetheart, Mike, in 1962. They just celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary. She worked at home keeping her husband’s many businesses in order, being a mom, and feeding the mass of teammates her kids brought home, earning her the nickname “The Magic Wand(a)/The Magic One.”
Wanda had a very large and extended family, having over a dozen aunts and uncles, some of whom were younger than her, and too many cousins to count. She was the beloved mother of 3 boys and grammy to 5 grandchildren.
Her happy spot was Hilton Head, SC, sitting on her balcony overlooking the ocean, where she could watch both the sunrise and sunset. She and Mike spent nearly every winter there for the last 30 years, enjoying retirement, walking on the beach, and playing golf.
She was an exceptional cook, honing that skill from ‘Mom’ Brown, and hardly ever used a recipe. There was always breakfast on the table in the morning, lunches, after-school snacks (for the aforementioned high school friends and teammates), and especially dinners. One year, her son, Mike, requested her to write down her recipes for a Christmas present. She spent a year writing down her ingredients as she cooked. That cookbook is beyond priceless.
Wanda loved her family. She instilled kindness, love, and respect in those around her. She hosted many family and high school reunions at her home over the years. She prepped and prepared food for days in advance. No one ever left hungry.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Alberta; father, Ray; and sister, Linda.
Her loving family, Mike; Mike II & Katie (Zach & Alex); and Marty & Megan (Henely), request that, in lieu of flowers, you consider making a donation to Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton. The genuine kindness, love, professionalism, respect, and service to our family both during and after this difficult time were beyond amazing. https://www.ohioshospice.org/give/
Funeral services will be at 2 pm on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at Stubbs-Conner Funeral Home in Waynesville. Burial will be at Miami Cemetery in Corwin. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 pm on Tuesday at the funeral home. Condolences at https://www.stubbsconner.com.miami
