Douglas E. Filaseta's Obituary
FILASETA, Douglas E., age 79, of Waynesville, passed away Saturday, February 5, 2022.
Doug graduated from Springboro High School, class of ’60. He served six years in the United States Army Reserves during the Vietnam era. In his early years, he worked as a home builder and built several houses, including all of the homes he and his wife Joyce lived in. He worked as a building electrical inspector for Warren County approximately ten years and retired in 2008 as Chief Building Official from the City of Centerville. All combined, he worked nearly 40 years for the county and city. Doug also assisted his wife in owning and operating a gifts and collectibles shop in downtown Waynesville for 27 years.
He was one of the founders, a board member, and an active participant of Heritage Christian Church in Centerville.
He was an incredible husband, dad, grandpa and friend. Gentle yet strong, loving and kind, he was a humble servant and selfless leader highly admired by his family.
He loved being outside mowing his lawn, tending his garden, and watching his kids and grandkids play basketball, as well as watching March Madness. In addition, he liked to play cards and games with family and friends. He enjoyed cards so much that over the past 50 years, he and his wife have gotten together with dear friends, Mickey and Sharon Elam, to play cards while bringing in the New Year.
He developed many traditions over the years that became treasured memories. Bench rifle shooting, originally introduced to the family by his late father-in-law, Bill Asbury, became one of those traditions. Doug and his family often made trips to the Spring Valley range to practice their shooting skills. He enjoyed RV trips with his wife to Gatlinburg, Amish country, Hocking Hills, and Naples during the colder months. He loved making peanut brittle at Christmas, which became another tradition that he was currently passing down to a grandson. He loved reading and collecting books, especially legal mysteries, westerns, Christian fiction, and Christian end-time prophecy literature. Among many things, he will be remembered as an avid blood donor, which began as a gesture to a friend during cancer treatment. Doug ultimately continued donating blood for many years and was getting near records for the amount and number of times he donated, always with nothing more than a desire to help those in need.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Jane Filaseta. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joyce; son Jeff (Laura) Filaseta; daughter, Dea (Ken) Burkard; four grandchildren, Brandon Filaseta, Jennifer (Tyler) Hudson, Daniel Burkard, and Matt Filaseta; great-granddaughter, Ivory; brother-in-law Richard (Mary Ann) Smith; sister-in-law, Roslyn (Ken) Patrick; and many extended family members and dear friends.
Funeral services will be held 1 PM Thursday, February 10, at Heritage Christian Church in Centerville. Burial will be in Springboro Cemetery. Randy Snyder and David Ladd will be officiating the services. The family will receive friends 11 AM - 1 PM Thursday at the church. In memory of Doug, and if desired, contributions may be made to Heritage Christian Church. Stubbs-Conner Funeral Home in Waynesville is serving the family.
