Lillie Faye Sturgill's Obituary
STURGILL, Lillie Faye Salyer, age 90, of Waynesville, passed away Wednesday, June 7, 2023.
Lillie was a member of the Hoover Avenue Church of God in Dayton, where she was a long-term member of the Women's Willing Worker's Ministry and prayer warrior. In her later life, she attended Crossview Christian Church in Waynesville. While her mother was living, Lillie and Minnie started a mother/daughter prayer ministry where they created quilted lap covers and took them to the residents of Quaker Heights Nursing Home in Waynesville and several other local nursing homes residents.
Sweet to everyone, Lillie was loving, caring, and helpful. Always upbeat and positive, she always had something nice to say about others. Her favorite hobby was sewing and quilting. While her kids were growing up, she made clothes for them. However, the numerous beautiful quilts that Lillie created were most notable. After the kids grew up, she became an avid bowler and participated in leagues at Poelking Lanes. She won multiple trophies and even earned a championship bowling title during a local competition. She was an excellent cook and will always be remembered for her delicious potato salad and white divinity fudge with pecans. It was a tradition for Lilie to host the family Christmas holiday at her home. Christmas morning, she would cook brown pork chop gravy, fried apples, fried apples, and fried potatoes. For Christmas dinner, she cooked ham and made her famous potato salad, sweet potatoes, and other delectables. The family got back together for a New Year’s Day dinner, where she made spare ribs, mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, and cornbread. She collected Longaberger baskets and had quite a collection when she was younger. Among many things, she will always be remembered for her infectious smile and spirit, which radiated the love of God to others.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Douglas "Doug", in 2009; her parents, Minnie and Orion "Hayes" Salyer; one brother, Robert “Bob” Hayes Salyer; and one sister, Nellie Mae Bottomly. She is survived by four daughters, Brenda Faye Shearer, Freda Dolores Porterfield, Donna Sue (Mark) Cole, and Cathy Diane (Rick) Sanders-Brown; six grandchildren, Terry James Silvers Jr., Jennifer Faye (Joe) Mannarelli, Brian (Maria) Huberfield, Nicole Bardoff, Carly (Jacob) Zona, and Kate Sanders; seven great-grandchildren, Caralena Faye "Lena", Madeline Faye "Maddie", Brooklyn, Tyler, Hannah, Abigail, and Andrew; one brother, Billy Gene "Bill" (Gwen) Salyers (yes, he has an S at the end of his last name, which was always humorous to the family); and two sisters, Mary Fern (James) Cook and Elizabeth "Liz" Perez.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Saturday, June 17, at Stubbs-Conner Funeral Home in Waynesville. Burial will be in South Vienna Cemetery near Springfield. Rick Wiley will be officiating the services. The family will receive friends 10 - 11 AM Saturday at the funeral home. Condolences at www.stubbsconner.com.
