Mary Joan Newland's Obituary
NEWLAND, Mary Joan, age 90, of Springboro and formerly of Waynesville, died peacefully on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at Hidden Springs Senior Living in Springboro.
Mary graduated from Harveysburg High School, class of ’53. After her kids were older, she started working for the Warren County Career Center, where she retired after more than 20 years of service as the administrative assistant for adult education. She was a member of both St. Augustine Catholic Church in Waynesville and St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Parish in Springboro. She had a wonderful tradition of going to the 5:30 mass with her mother and daughter, and following the mass, going home to watch The Golden Girls.
Courageously, she was a do-it-yourselfer and would always figure out how to make things happen. It was imperative to her that she was a strong, independent woman. Mary loved gardening, working in her flower beds, and creating a great sanctuary for her beloved hummingbirds. She enjoyed mowing, especially on her John Deere. Reading was one of her favorite pastimes, and she always had some new magazines or the day’s paper on the table for anyone to flip through. Every morning, she would wake up early and sit with her cup of coffee on the back porch, reading her newspaper and watching the deer trot by.
Family was everything to Mary, and she did everything she could for them. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. Positive and kind, she never wanted anyone to be sad and was known for her huge capacity for love. She had a beautiful smile and was a big jokester. She made every occasion together special, from Christmas Eves at her house to celebrating birthdays at Kings Island and even spending summers at Lake Hope. She loved antiques and collected Hummels, tins, and baskets. Among many things, she will be remembered for the love and pride she had for her family.
Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Tandy, in 1999; her granddaughter, Jennifer Cornett; her parents, John and Louise Gough; and her two brothers, John “Jack” Gough and Richard “Dick” Gough. She is survived by her two sons, Mike (Barbara) Newland and Mark (Cindy) Newland; two daughters, Anne Cornett, and Maria Newland; 10 grandchildren: Sarah, Nick, Maggie, Suzanne, Kate, Lindsey, Shelby, Madie, Kara, Brian, and Brendan; and 11 great-grandchildren: Logan, Isabella, Ava, Mason, Erin, Emma, Elsie, Leona, Rowan, Sadie, and Bennett.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff of Day City Hospice and Hidden Springs Senior Living for the compassionate care and kindness shown to Mary and her family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Parish in Springboro. Father Fox will be officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Dayton. Stubbs-Conner Funeral Home in Waynesville is serving the family. If desired, contributions may be made to the Day City Hospice.
