Noel E. Curran's Obituary
CURRAN, Noel E., age 88, of Waynesville and formerly of Westerville, passed away Saturday, October 21, 2023, at Hospice of Dayton.
Noel was born in Carlisle, England, and emigrated to the United States at age 12. He met his future wife, Eileen Hertzer, at Bellevue High School in Bellevue, Ohio. He graduated from Bowling Green State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in 1958 and earned a Master’s Degree from Ohio State University in 1974. He worked 31 years in education as a biology teacher at Columbus North High School and then as a counselor at Mifflin High School.
Besides his passionate advocation of education, Noel was an avid bird watcher, gardener, and traveler. For over 50 years, Noel and Eileen traveled the world, visiting countries on six continents and every state in the United States. Noel loved investigating the natural world, and their travels pursued viewing hummingbirds in the cloud forests of Costa Rica to African fauna in the Masai Mara to the wintering sites of the Monarch Butterfly in the mountains of Mexico, and much more.
Not to be missed in their travels were the public gardens of the world. When not traveling, Noel would work to create his own Japanese-style garden in the yard of his home.
Even after his retirement from education, Noel continued to share his vast knowledge and experience by acting as a sage and consultant for friends and family. He will be missed by all who knew him.
“To travel is better than to arrive because traveling is a constant arrival.”
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary Curran. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Eileen; one daughter, Jennifer (Blair) Savage; one son, Joseph (Beth) Curran; four grandchildren, Allison Savage, Kevin Savage, Alan Curran, and Scot Curran; and one brother, Raymond (Connie) Curran.
